A prosciutto and goat cheese croissant sandwich. Does it justify an entire written recipe? Well, hear me out…

It does.

Take a regular ham and cheese sandwich, but elevate it. The secret to this one is a generous drizzle of hot honey that pairs beautifully with the salty prosciutto. And speaking of which…

Let’s Start with the Prosciutto

Prosciutto, so paper-thin and delicately salty, is phenomenal on its own. This beloved Italian meat, made from high-quality pork legs, is covered in salt and left to rest for a few weeks. The salt draws out blood and moisture, which inhibits bacterial growth and helps preserve the meat – hence why it’s safe to consume without cooking.

Salting the meat also allows the flavors to become more concentrated, making it a bit of a flavor bomb.

After the salting process, the pork legs are washed, seasoned by hand, and left to dry-age at a controlled temperature for 14 to 36 months.

The combination of salt, air, and time gives prosciutto its delicate flavor. Served in paper-thin slices, its creamy texture melts on your tongue.

Now Onto the Cheese

Creamy cheeses pair especially well with prosciutto. Think cheddar, Gouda, goat cheese, Brie, etc.

For this sandwich, we’re going with goat cheese, obviously. Goat cheese has a bright, tart, and earthy flavor profile that adds a distinct tangy kick and creamy texture to the sandwich.

Sweet and Salty

And now that we have salty and tangy, we need something to tie it all together. Enter: hot honey.

I have this habit of adding hot honey to everything, but when it comes to salty prosciutto and tangy goat cheese, they’re practically begging for a generous drizzle of hot honey.

If by any chance you don’t like hot honey or don’t have it on hand, don’t worry! Your favorite jam works great, too.

Personally, I recommend either fig jam or apricot jam.

The Bread

Finally, for our vessel, we need a delicate, flavorful bread. In that case, nothing can beat a flaky, buttery croissant. It’s the perfect foundation for this simple treat.

As always, good-quality ingredients are the key to a great recipe, especially when it comes to elevating a simple sandwich into something magical.

I don’t usually toast mine, but you can certainly toast yours in a 400°F oven for about 5 minutes or in a skillet.
