Sparkling Ginger Lemonade

These balmy days of summer have me craving something sparkling and refreshing at all times. There’s nothing like reaching for a cold citrusy beverage on a hot day, when you’re severely dehydrated and your body’s need for liquid seems to be endless. The great thing about lemonade is the fact that it’s so simple. The unadulterated nature of it, the unassuming ingredients, how old-fashioned it is.

When you mix water, sugar, and lemon something magical happens and suddenly you have the ultimate thirst quencher. Anyways, the great thing about this specific lemonade is the slight hint of ginger that gives it a mild fiery kick.

Just like any other lemonade made from scratch, you get to monitor each ingredient and make it as tangy/sweet/fiery as your heart desires, so this recipe is really just a starting point. When making the syrup, I tried a couple different rations and found this one works best for me. It’s more on the liquidy side that the syrupy, thick side, mostly because I like my lemonade tart, so I’m very conservative when adding sugar.

The ratios work perfect for me, but feel free to adjust to your liking! I also like making things pretty, so I suggest adding fresh blueberries or lemon slices, or maybe garnish with cute flowers for a pinterest vibe. Fresh mint is also a great idea.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh ginger, peeled and sliced

  • 1 cup water

  • 3/4 cup sugar

  • 8 medium lemons

  • 1 liter sparkling water

  • ice as needed

  • blueberries or mint, optional for garnish

Directions

  • Make the ginger syrup: in a saucepan over medium heat, combine the sugar, ginger, and water. Stir until the sugar is dissolved, and bring to a light boil. Cover, reduce heat, and allow to simmer for about 15 minutes.

  • Remove from the heat and allow to cool and steep in the covered pan for at least 15 minutes or until it reaches your preferred taste. Strain out the ginger.

  • Meanwhile, roll lemons on a hard surface to help bring their juices to the surface. Cut in half lengthwise, and squeeze into a measuring cup.

  • Add ice to a glass jar, then pour in lemon juice and sparkling water. Stir in ginger syrup to taste.

  • Garnish with fresh blueberries or mint leaves. Serve.
