Christmas Home Décor Guide: Setting the Scene

Welcome to A Small Kitchen Christmas! A short-but-mighty series dedicated to all things Christmas. For installment one, we’re covering the basics: setting the scene. Here’s your festive Christmas Home Décor Guide to kickstart your holiday season.

Before we talk brunch menus, pie fillings, or the annual attempt to convince guests that yes, I did mean to make an entire dessert table, we start with the atmosphere.

Because Christmas magic doesn’t just appear. No, silly, you have to stage it! Nothing in this world comes easily, naturally, organically. Everything is produced, manipulated, crafted! It’s called building with intention (or whatever the marketing departments are calling it these days). You have to will it into existence. Preferably with good lighting.

Christmas Home Décor Guide: Setting the Scene

Every year, I collect little sparks of inspiration that make Christmas feel special. I like my Christmas like I like my holiday movies: bright, slightly ridiculous, and over the top. If there’s ever a time to be kitschy, this is it. Think bright tinsel, retro ornaments, and a generous touch of ’90s nostalgia, strong enough to make you put on Mariah Carey, sip Martha’s eggnog, and weigh your tree down with ornaments your mom has been keeping in the attic since 1998.

So please step into my Christmas time machine: a mix of glitter, tinsel, and ornaments that probably shouldn’t exist but somehow do. Think ’90s nostalgia meets maximalist cheer. This moodboard is everything I want my holidays to feel like: familiar, colorful, and extra, very extra.

So now that the moodboard is set, it’s time to bring the vibes to life. Let’s talk about how to make your home feel instantly festive, cozy, and a little bit magical, no matter the occasion.

Light the Candles

If fall is for baking, let’s say winter is for lighting things on fire (safely, of course — we’re not barbarians, after all, we’re just highly enthusiastic people).

Thankfully, we live in a stage of capitalism that fully anticipates needs we didn’t think possible: a perfect Christmas-tree-shaped wax candle? We got it!

I love having candles around the house year-round (you know, the ones you get at the dollar store? Gorgeous without breaking the bank). I believe a few well-placed candles always do the heavy lifting for you, no matter the occasion. It’s instantly warm, instantly festive, instantly announces “I tried,” without screaming it in your face — very elegant and demure.

So to set the scene, we’re starting with candles! Think of them as the atmospheric foundation: a soft glow, a pine-scented whisper, a hint of clove if you’re feeling spicy. They’re the unsung heroes of ambiance: warm, inviting, and just the right amount of festive without trying too hard.

Place them where you want the room to feel cozier or in unexpected places: the mudroom, on the kitchen counter, coffee table, bathroom (if you want to imply to your guests that this household takes the holidays seriously, but you’re not, like, crazy about it or anything).

Dress the House

It’s time to stop thinking of your home as a place to live and start thinking of it as a stage. A holiday stage. Garlands! Wreaths! Pillows! Trees! They are all your props, and you —yes, you — are the director of this wonderful chaos.

Swap a pillow here, hang a wreath there, drape a garland like you mean it, and suddenly you’ll be hosting your very own live festive production. Nothing has to match, in fact, nothing really should. Nothing has to make sense. It just has to sparkle in all the right ways.

Deck the Branches

Ornaments are the jewelry of your Christmas tree, and your branches deserve a little glamour. Mix the fancy stuff with the charming, the shiny with the slightly ridiculous, don’t be afraid of a cluster or two — they make it look intentional.

Singles look artsy and gaps look strategic. This is where your personality shines, or sparkles, literally.

And turns out decking the halls isn’t just for show — it’s good for your mood too!

Research shows that homes decorated for Christmas signal friendliness and approachability, even to strangers. People looking at decorated homes tend to assume the residents are more sociable and welcoming, whether that’s strictly true or not.

So every ornament, garland, and twinkle of lights is basically a tiny, scientifically backed happiness booster, for you and anyone who passes by.

Turn On the Holiday Tunes

And finally, no scene is complete without a soundtrack. Before the wreaths, before the garlands, before the crying over that one stubborn bulb, put on a festive playlist.

Pour yourself a glass of wine or hot chocolate and turn it into an event. Grab the whole family. Grab your friends, the cat, or your favorite movie characters on the screen. Christmas is about making traditions together. And happiness is only real when shared!
