Three Easy Snacks for Your Summer Watch Party

Summer evenings, golden hour in the backyard, and an old classic (or perhaps The Summer I Turned Pretty?) queued up – what could make it better? Easy: snacks that match the vibe of your watch party. Forget chips and soda, these three bites are simple, delicious, and a little unexpected: buttery shrimp rolls, sweet-and-savory cantaloupe wrapped in mortadella, and tiny cookies dunked in chilled milk shots.

Last week I threw a casual The Summer I Turned Pretty watch party. The kind that you can put together on a weekday, in between work calls or after your commute. The menu was simple, the theme was summer and nostalgia, and it all came together in under two hours (and that’s including the homemade buns that you absolutely should swap for store-bought). If you’re planning your own movie night (or next week’s episode), here’s a simple, but fun menu to inspire you.

For a late August movie night, you really only need three things, if you ask me: a cozy couch, a good friend (or five), and a short menu that feels like summer on a plate.

Summer is the hum of cicadas through the window, beads of melting ice on a chilled glass, beach towels that never really dry. It’s sticky forearms on patio tables, fruit that drips down your chin, and the kind of evenings that linger long after the light is gone.

For a summer movie night, the menu should feel the same way: fleeting, comforting, and just messy enough that you can eat with your hands. Nothing too fussy, nothing that keeps you trapped in the kitchen while everyone else is rehashing who Belly really belongs with. Just a couple things to carry you through the drama: something savory, something sweet, and something nostalgic to end on.

A Three-Snack Menu For Your Summer Watch Party

Shrimp Rolls

A.k.a. lobster roll’s laid-back cousin. Brioche buns toasted in butter and a shrimp filling that you can make in fifteen minutes: sauté the shrimp in a generous amount of garlic and butter over low heat, so they absorb the flavors without overcooking. While they cool, thinly slice some celery and chives. Chop the shrimp, then toss with the celery, chives, mayo, whole grain mustard, Calabrian paste, and a squeeze of lemon. I like to add in fresh corn with the shrimp for sweetness and crunch.

Cantaloupe + Mortadella

Sweet meets salty in this simple and elegant snack. Drape paper-thin slices of mortadella (or prosciutto, the traditional choice) over juicy cantaloupe wedges. For a more interesting version, I like topping with freshly grated Parmesan and a drizzle of basil oil – it adds flavor and a pop of color. This snack requires very little forethought: juts prep, assemble, and eat.

Milk & Cookie Shots

End on nostalgia! You could bake mini chocolate chip cookies, press them into muffin pans to make little cups, then fill with cold milk. But I prefer the shortcut: serve warm cookies balanced atop glasses of milk. This way you can make the dough ahead of time, roll into balls, freeze, and bake for 10 minutes right before serving.

Why This Menu Works

Flavor Variety! You’ve got sweet, savory, and buttery bites covering every craving.

Quick Prep: the shrimp salad takes about 15 minutes. The cantaloup is just a matter of cutting the melon into wedges and wrapping them with mortadella. And finally, for the cookies you can make the dough ahead of time and just pop in the oven for about 10 minutes – or just get store-bought!

Easily Shareable: the shrimp rolls and cantaloupe slices fit neatly in your hand, meant to be grabbed and enjoyed as the juices drip down your wrist (side plates highly recommended).

Minimal Mess: None of these require utensils or complicated plating, so guests can nibble between episodes without ever missing a beat.

Fun & Interactive: Whether it’s dunking cookies into milk shots or grabbing bites off a platter, these snacks turn eating into part of the party.

So there you have it: three snacks, one great excuse to invite everyone over, and zero stress. If you try any of these snacks, let me know in the comments! What’s your favorite watch party snack? I’d love to know!
