As a self-described romcom expert, here are six romcoms that are actually funny. Actually, they’re not just funny, they’re equal amounts of charming, romantic and hilarious.
I love romcoms so much, I was practically raised by them. My devotion to the genre is so fierce, I’ve long ago declared myself an expert on the subject. When I was younger, I filled countless high school weekends with movies, most of them romcoms. Those long afternoons spent with friends have turned into the loveliest memories that I so treasure.
As a matter of fact, I used to be the biggest movie buff: I made endless watch lists, started a DVD collection, I even read scripts for fun! What a nerd.
I’m fairly certain I’ve watched every single romcom from the 90s and early 00’s. Forget about Hollywood classical cinema, the 90s and early 00’s were the real golden age. I love the simplicity of movies back then, the grainy cinematography and the undeniable sense of nostalgia it evokes.
Nowadays, rare are the days when I sit down to watch a new movie, but I’m still a movie nerd at heart. I still collect those old thrifted DVDs and I still enjoy reading scripts. Every once in a while, I’ll revisit an old favorite and fall in love all over again. The good thing about having an unreliable memory is that after a few years, rewatching a movie really does feel like the first time.
Last night I watched Duplex for the first time in years and oh boy, I had forgotten how dark and funny that movie was! So, as the self-proclaimed romcom connoisseur that I am, I feel I’m qualified enough to share six romantic comedies that are actually funny. These movies put the rom AND the com in romantic comedies and are positively true to their genre: they’re equal amounts of charming and hilarious.
Just Friends
I seem to be really fond of Just Friends, considering it’s not the first time I mention it. In my defense, it really is an equal amount of charming and hilarious! That are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, like Anna Faris playing the guitar and gracing the audience with one of her songs, forgiveness, is more than saying sorry!
Just Friends is the typical story about a guy that used to be a loser in love with his best friend in high school. Fast forward years later and he’s turned his life around: he’s a big shot record executive somewhat dating a wacky pop star.
One day, fate has him stuck in his hometown during the holidays, where old love returns and chaos ensues.
Just Married
Just Married has all the elements of a successful romcom: two gorgeous leads, a meet cute, adorable montages, lots of trouble, a grand gesture, and the most essential element of them all: chemistry!!
Brittany Murphy and Ashton Kutcher have incredible onscreen chemistry and they’re both great at physical comedy. Those two things alone are enough to make one hell of a romantic comedy, but Just Married is so more than that. Two lovebirds from different worlds – he’s an average guy who works a low-level job, she’s an aspiring writer from a wealthy family – go on a honeymoon that turns outrages and hilariously funny. I really mean outrageous and funny.
Two Weeks Notice
Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant are an iconic pair. Their chemistry is undeniable and they both embody their characters so flawlessly, you almost forget this is not real! Needless to say, that makes Two Weeks Notice cute and romantic, but also incredibly funny.
Just picture it: a Harvard educated lawyer who uses her career for social activism goes to work for a man-child billionaire as part of a deal to preserve a community center. He’s indecisive and weak-willed and grows awfully dependent on her on everything, from legal matters to clothing. Exasperated, she gives notice and picks another graduate as her replacement – a hot redhead that causes some trouble. As her time at the firm nears an end, she starts growing jealous of the new hire and second thoughts about leaving the billionaire.. And you can imagine the rest.
There are plenty of funny moments, including obviously, laugh-out-loud ones.
Fools Rush In
This underrated romcom is a real hidden gem. It’s a typical opposites attract love story: a Latina girl, a white boy from New York, a one night stand, girl realizes she is pregnant, boy proposes, they get married (You’re married? The one with the body?!). After lots of chaos and culture clashes, they fall in love.
Fools Rush In is a very sweet movie and perhaps not as laugh-out-loud as most of the other movies here. But there’s plenty of chemistry between Mathew Perry and Salma Hayek and that’s enough for me.
In the end, this is a story about fate, Gray’s papaya, and white people melting. IYKYK.
The Wedding Date
The premise of The Wedding Date is simple and with an ending you can see from a mile away: Single-girl anxiety causes Kat Ellis to hire a male escort to pose as her boyfriend at her sister’s wedding. Sold!
The cast is fantastic (so is the soundtrack), Debra Messing is great at physical comedy and our lovebirds have plenty of chemistry! More rom than com, but a solid mix of both!
Duplex
A black comedy starring Drew Barrymore and Ben Stiller and directed by Danny DeVito. Need I say more??
Duplex is hilarious and has a great twist! It all starts when a young couple finds their perfect home to start a family in. Things are going so perfectly. What could go wrong!
It turns out a lot. But there is really just one problem: an elderly tenant that won’t go away.
